Direct brain-computer links for consumer PCs
Recent advances in neuroscience have filtered down to the mainstream, and are beginning to revolutionise the world of computing. Mind control interfaces – having been in development for the past few decades – are becoming sophisticated enough to allow users to initiate complex actions on-screen using their thoughts alone. This technology has been available for commercial and military application since 2034. Experience from the various wars had shown that AI controlled UCAV’s were tactically inferior to human controlled UCAV’s.
Earlier generations of this technology allowed only simple directional commands, via crude headsets, usually limited to gaming applications. These new versions, however, utilise a functional MRI system with such high speed, resolution and efficiency that patterns for individual words can be instantly deciphered from the user’s brain.
In addition to words, tiny movements and other subtle actions can be recognised during the scanning process, then translated into activity on-screen. A person is thus able to move a cursor around the screen, compose lengthy messages, manage databases or play games, merely by thinking about it.
Keyboards, mice and other peripheral devices are becoming obsolete as a result of this, with desktops and laptops taking on a far more minimal appearance.
This technology is being combined with virtual reality and strong AI, to create fully immersive games, movies and other experiences.
